from tenders to timber – bids to bricks

MEAT, no veg

that’s the bid world

I’ve worked across construction since my mid-twenties assembling bid proposals (tendering for large construction contracts – mainly for public sector clients and projects). Clients look for the bid offering the greatest MEAT (most economically advantageous tender). And a winning bid will be awarded to the contractor that can convince the client that they offer the best benefits and value for money.

That’s my role.

To write compelling ‘pitches’ (how, what, when and who will deliver the project), the best value, bolstered benefits and ensure the bid is submitted to a pre-determined deadline. Invariably, the winning bid is awarded to the contractor offering the lowest price (despite efforts to illustrate the benefits and best value).

MEAT = cheapest. Veg (a side order) = benefits. And if the side order is an added cost, MEAT with no veg always takes preference.

Roles in the bid world are challenging, demanding, frustrating an often involve unnecessary drama. I quit daily (in my head) – I then started to see the funny side – and eventually I wrote tales that twisted the traumas.
